During the course of 2008, several explosions at electrical substations caused widespread power interruptions. We also read in the newspapers and seen it on Television how raw sewage spilled into dams and rivers as a direct result of problems at the Waste Water Treatment Plants.
On 3 August 2007, the headlines in The Christian Monitor of Minneapolis read: “Bridge collapse spotlights America's deferred maintenance.” Ron Scherer wrote that “The tragic rush-hour collapse in Minneapolis of the I-35W Bridge over the Mississippi River is again forcing a reexamination of the nation's approach to maintaining and inspecting critical infrastructure.”
This highlights the fact that asset managers must know and understand the condition of their infrastructures assets, including the estimated cost of their deferred maintenance. If they know their asset’s conditions and deferred maintenance cost, they will best be able to budget for and prioritise their infrastructures asset’s repair efforts.
